The dominant failure modes in seawater are chloride-induced pitting, crevice corrosion and localized attack under fouling. Monel 400 and Monel K500 remain the traditional mainstay for seawater shaft parts, while XM-19 (Nitronic 50) offers roughly twice the yield strength of 316 for extended service life. MP35N is recommended where non-magnetic behaviour is required for logging and navigation equipment.
